Illinois County Board Awards $15.5 Million to Family After Tragic Car Crash

Comments Off

Rockford, Illinois—Winnebago County was recently ordered to pay the Bachman family $15.5 million in a settlement against a sheriff’s deputy who drove his squad car into the family’s car, killing two members and brain damaging a third.

On January 14, 2006, Aaron Bachman, age 21, DJ Bachman, age 15, and Kori Bachman, age 19, were driving when Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Boomer broadsided their vehicle in a police squad car. Aaron and DJ were killed, while Kori suffered brain damage. The children’s parents, Kim and Frank Bachman, filed one lawsuit, and Aaron’s widow, Lindsey Bachman, filed a second lawsuit soon after.

The two lawsuits were presented to the County Board members during a closed session meeting on September 14. The Board voted unanimously to award the Bachman family: $3 million to Lindsey for the death of her husband and $12.5 million to Kim and Frank Bachman, who maintain guardianship of their now brain-damaged daughter. Meanwhile, the lawsuit over DJ’s death is still outstanding and could go to trial.
