Halloween Safety Tips Can Keep Scares to a Minimum

Halloween is this Saturday, meaning thousands of children robots, princesses, and superheroes will be roaming our communities for tricks and treats.  And while this holiday is a favorite for many kids, that much foot traffic after sunset can cause some problems.  Follow a few simple safety tips to help keep Halloween fun, safe, and enjoyable for everyone:

• Cross the street at crosswalks and use traffic signals and never dart into the street without looking
• Travel in groups – kids under 12 should be accompanied by an adult
• Use reflective tape on costumes and carry a flashlight
• Costumes should fit well – no dragging fabric that could cause a fall – and avoid masks that obstruct vision
• Never enter a stranger’s house and visit only well-lit houses
• Adults should inspect the Halloween haul and only factory-wrapped treats should be eaten

These tips are just a small summary of good practices to help keep kids safe during this exciting holiday.  Many communities have established trick-or-treating hours and often have enhanced law enforcement presence.  Call 9-1-1 immediately if an emergency arises.
