Lansing Motorcyclist Killed in Accident With Pickup Truck

Tragically, a Lansing area motorcyclist was killed on Saturday morning after he was struck by a pickup truck at the intersection of Waverly and Bishop Roads.  Kevin Hornbeck, age 55, of Delta Township was traveling north on Waverly Road when collided with a Ford F-150 traveling west on Bishop Road.  Police say that the driver of the truck stopped at the stop sign, but failed to see the motorcyclist who had the right of way.

Waverly and Bishop Intersection Deemed “Especially Deadly”

Although the intersection of Waverly and Bishop may seem harmless, it’s been the sight of several deadly accidents.  Back in April an 89-year-old woman died when her car was pinned by a gravel truck.  People who live near the intersection also say that it is the sight of many serious accidents at least 2-3 times per week.  One of the most influential aspects contributing to the intersection’s danger is that many drivers fail to yield for the stop sign.  Although that wasn’t a factor in the most recent accident, neighbors say that a four way stop sign or a stop light would help to improve the safety of the intersection.

Accident Still Under Investigation; Alcohol and Speed Not Believed to Be Factors

Authorities say they are still investigating the accident that occurred on Saturday.  However, alcohol and speed are not believed to be contributing factors.  The motorcyclist was immediately given CPR at the site, and was later transported to McLaren Greater Lansing Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  The other driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.  The intersection remained closed for part of the day on Saturday as crews cleaned up after the horrific accident.  No one has been issued a citation for the accident yet.
