Auto Recalls Spawn New Safety Legislation

Comments Off

One of the biggest news stories of 2014 was the record number of automotive recalls.  From faulty GM ignition switches to dangerous Takata airbags and everything in between, about 64 MILLION vehicles were recalled in the United States, surpassing the old record by almost 10 million units.  Concerns over slow-acting automakers compromising consumer safety has led to new legislation that should help protect motorists.

Whistle-Blowers Rewarded

The new bill emerged from the Senate Commerce Committee.  It aims to protect and reward whistle-blowers who inform the government of potential reporting violations committed by auto manufacturers.  The goal of the proposed law is to encourage people with knowledge of potentially serious or deadly defects to come forward with information that could help save lives.

Bill Heads to Full Senate

For the bill to become law, it has to clear the full Senate, the House of Representatives, and be signed by the President.  That process could take months, if it happens at all.  Still, of all the issues before Congress, this one seems likely to gain bipartisan support.  Keeping our vehicles and roadways safe should be a priority for all involved.
